Summer balls and proms can be stressful to dress for, as occasion wear is sometimes a little tricky to get just right. You don’t want to go over the top with a full on ball gown fit for Cinderella, and you don’t want to look like your simply off to Tiger Tiger for a night out! Here I have found 5 different styles of summer ball dresses, inspired from runways of the past and fit for a range of girls fashion preferences. From retro dresses to glamorous jumpsuits, you don’t have to go for something boring and safe, instead choose something that you will feel and look amazing in, because it is not every day that you get the chance to dress up swanky, so have fun and take a look at these dresses for a little inspiration.
The Glamour Girl
Why not try something a little different this year and opt for an on trend and comfortable jumpsuit! This ‘Break hearts’ jumpsuit from Cameo at Topshop may be a little pricey at £135, but why not just treat yourself. This open back straight leg onesie will look amazing and will most definitely help you stand out from the crowd. To add a little colour, maybe opt for bright shoes and a clutch or wear simple accessories and some bright red lippy.
If you’re a girl who loves every thing pink, bright and fun, maybe try something that will look both pretty but a little more subtly cool. This French Connection dress, which is £150 (great place to buy understated but fashionable evening dresses) is lovely and cute, with its A-line cut and soft pink and pastel spray paint effect you will feel pretty in pink but still mature and chic.
The Floral Girl
I absolutely love bardot cut tops and dresses because they are so flattering and I have even chosen a bardot style dress for myself this year. This off the shoulder ASOS midi bodcon dress is fab and is great if your wanting a sexy and summery look. The gorgeous shades of the dress is easy to colour co-ordinate with accessories as you could go for cream, pink or even a lilac shade of shoes and purse. At only £38 this outfit is a steal and would turn some heads at your summer event this year.
You can never go wrong with classic styles like this dress because they always look so cool and on trend and the simplicity of them is what creates such a strong look. This beautiful White dobby lace midi dress by Miss Selfridge is great for any retro enthusiasts as its high paneled neck and sheer overlay looks clean cut and very 1950’s. I love the detail of the underlay and think it is an absolute bargain at only £49, grab it now with you’re student discounts!
The Boho Girl
If you aren’t into the whole girly dress up style then maybe opt for something a little more earthy and downplayed with this absolutely gorgeous maxi dress from ASOS. This boho bargain is £90 and includes fabulous lace inserts and floral embroidery to create a really pretty and natural look. This would look great with some wedges or even flats if you would rather a little more comfort, and to be festival ready as well (because who wants to buy a dress and only wear it once!) include a simple head chain and some loose curls to the style.
Some of my top fashion picks
Felicity Jones – Miss Jones wore a beautifully fitting Dior couture gown with floral embellishments on the skirt, which added some young and girly style to the look
Kristin Scott Thomas – Showing that she still hasn’t lost it, Kristin went for a vintage 1948 Balmain couture dress which looked chic and cool with diamond jewelry
Laura Bailey – My favourite dress of the night was by designer Emilia Wickstead which looked flawless on Laura as it was simple and elegant with its high neck line and short sleeves
Rosamund Pike – With her classic beauty, Rosamund Pike never falters and the BAFTAS was no different as she wore a Roland Mouret halter neck dress in black
Lea Seyloux – Not only was her choice of the yellow Prada gown amazing, but her makeup of striking red lips and sleek hair created an instant showstopper of an outfit
I recently handmade this skirt from a Butterick sewing pattern from the 60’s! I’m still very much a beginner at sewing and am self taught, so was pretty proud of this little garment especially as it only took a couple of hours to make as my first attempt 🙂 Scroll down for my handmade croptops and search Retro Rose Fashion on Facebook and @retrorosefashion94 on Instagram to see more creations!
